UIC Law Review

Specific Citation Rules

  • Every parenthetical should be one sentence.
  • If further explanation is needed after the parenthetical – use id. after each sentence if from the same source.
  • Use italics NOT underlining
  • Do NOT use id. more than five times in a row – unless you are analyzing ONE case.
    • A full cite of the same source instead of using id. is NOT a way to bypass this rule.
    • The multiple use of id. in the same footnote does not count toward this rule.
  • Do NOT use supra for cases or statutes – use rules for short citations.
  • Do NOT follow Bluebook Rule 10.9 (stating unless a case is cited in the same footnote or the preceding five footnotes, then a full citation is required).
  • Short citations for cases are acceptable even if not cited in the last five footnotes.
  • Do NOT use https for website addresses.
  • Do NOT include the designation of “article” or “comment” in the title of your work.
  • Every signal gets a parenthetical beginning with a gerund.

The Five Id. Rule: An Example

14. Levitsky & Ziblatt, supra note 7.

15. The authors illustrate this thesis in the American context with the norm violation and counter-norm violation that went on in America from Newt Gingrich’s arrival in 1978 to the end of the George W. Bush Presidency. Id. at 146-57.

16. Id. at 101-102.

17. Id. at 106. The authors also note another base norm, mutual toleration. Id. at 102. But this norm turns out to be closely tied to forbearance. It means that my side will practice forbearance as long as your side does too.

18. Id. at 207-14.

19. Id. at 215.
