Bluebook Guide: Foreign Materials

This guide introduces the Bluebook's uniform system of legal citation.

Foreign Materials

  • Foreign materials provide legal citation rules for materials outside of the United States.
  • The material collected in R20, pp. 189-94, describes a variety of topics in summary fashion.
  • The Whitepages cover jurisdiction (R20.1, pp. 188-89), foreign documents (R20.2, pp. 189-91), cases (R20.3, pp. 191-92), constitutions (R20.4, p. 192), statutes (R20.5, pp. 192-93), and foreign periodicals (R20.6, pp. 193-94).
  • The information in the foreign jurisdiction table varies by country; however, typical information includes cases, constitutions, statutes, regulations, periodicals, and, in some cases, citation guidelines.
  • The foreign jurisdiction table is also a good place to start when conducting legal research for a foreign country.
  • The individual country entries are updated on an ongoing basis.
  • The Bluepages contain cursory information on foreign materials.  See B20, p. 28.

Table 2 - Foreign Jurisdictions

Beginning with the 21st Edition of The Bluebook, T2 is available on its website.  Individual entries are updated on an ongoing basis.  Presently, 44 foreign jurisdictions are covered in T2 (including the Catholic Church and Roman Law).

Need More Help?

Reference librarians are available to meet with students in one-on-one sessions (or in small groups) to discuss research strategies, recommend relevant resources or review specific topics of legal research.

Contact law-library@uic.edu with the research subject and a time to meet. A librarian will get back to you to set up an appointment.  Please request an appointment at least two days in advance.  Remember that immediate help with a quick research question may be obtained at the reference desk.
