What is Municipal Law?

Municipal law is the legal framework that empowers and regulates local governments like cities and towns. It dictates how these entities operate, manage local affairs, and serve residents. This body of law covers a broad spectrum of issues, from zoning and taxation to public safety and infrastructure, ensuring that local communities can address their unique needs while remaining compliant with state and federal regulations. Essentially, the rules govern daily life within a specific locality.

Home Rule

Chicago is a "home rule" municipality in Illinois. This is very important. It means the city has a greater degree of autonomy in governing its affairs. This status, granted by the Illinois Constitution, allows Chicago to enact ordinances and regulations that address local concerns, without always needing specific authorization from the state.

Many states in the United States have some form of "home rule" provisions, although the specifics and extent of that authority vary significantly from state to state.

Nationwide Municipal Codes

Many other local municipalities also have provisions covering fair housing.
